Yale Wins Second Game 3-0

Game 2 Box Score
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In her two starts prior to Wednesday,
Kayla Kuretich was dominating for the Yale softball team. She
brought it to a higher level against Marist, taking a no-hitter
into the seventh inning before allowing a one-out single as the
Bulldogs blanked the Red Foxes 3-0 to earn a split of a non-league
doubleheader. Marist won the first game 4-3.
Kuretich finished with a one-hitter. She struck out six and
walked four in earning her second win of the season. Danielle Koltz
spoiled the no-hit bid when she rolled a ground ball single through
the left side of the infield.
Lauren Huddleston provided all the offense Kuretich would need
by hitting a three-run homer in the fifth inning.
Marist's Caitlin Schell matched Kuretich through the first
four innings. The Bulldogs, though, got to her in the fifth. Lexi
Peacock was hit by a pitch to start the rally. With one out, Ashley
Sloan singled to right. Sloan then stole second, and Huddleston
followed with a homer to left, her first of the season.
Yale (3-9) finished with seven hits in the game. Huddleston was
3-for-4. Sloan, Meg Johnson, Holly Gutterud and Kelsey Warkentine
also had hits.
The Red Foxes (4-14) had the tying run at the plate in the
seventh. After Koltz's single, Lindsay Durant walked, but the
Bulldogs turned a nifty 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Yale trailed 3-2 entering the seventh inning of the first game,
but Christy Nelson belted a home run to left field to tie the
score.
Marist, though, scored the winning run in the bottom of the
seventh. With the bases loaded, Nicole DiVirgilio hit a slow roller
just past the pitcher's circle. Second baseman Jennifer Ong
made a nice play to field it, but Ashley Corriss beat Ong's
throw home.
Both teams had eight hits in the game.
Nelson was 3-for-4 for the Bulldogs.
Trailing 1-0, Yale used a two-out rally to take the lead in the
fourth. Gutterud started it with a single to left. Warkentine then
worked a walk, and Marist pitcher Alanna Woody threw two wild
pitches that allowed Gutterud and Warkentine to score.
Freshman Jackie Manzer pitched well for Yale. She went 6.1
innings and struck out five.
The Bulldogs play their home openers on Saturday, hosting Army
in a doubleheader. The first pitch of the first game is slated for
1 p.m. at Dewitt Family Field.
