No. 19 Blue At Dartmouth Saturday
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale men's
lacrosse team, ranked 19th in the latest USILA poll with
a 6-2 mark (1-2 Ivy), takes its two-game win streak into
Saturday's 1 p.m. Ivy League game at Dartmouth (3-4, 1-1),
which is coming off an upset of No. 6 Cornell.
SERIES
They have been playing each other since 1927, a 12-3 Yale win at
New Haven, and the Bulldogs have a 44-33 lead. However, Dartmouth
has won two straight and six of the last seven. The last Yale win
came in 2007 at Reese Stadium; the last Eli victory at Hanover was
in 2002.
LAST MEETING
Yale erased a five-goal deficit in the final quarter but came up
one short in an OT loss at Reese Stadium last April. Brian
Koch's goal gave the Green a 14-13 win while he finished with
three tallies and four points. Brendan Gibson led the Blue with
five points but Gregory Mahony hit the net four times. Yale goalie
Johnathan Falcone stopped 12 shots; his counterpart, Fergus
Campbell, had nine.
BULLDOGS GET PAST TITANS
Brian Douglass had six goals while Matt Gibson (1-5-6) and
Brendan Gibson (2-3-5) also had big days in Yale's 12-8 win
over Detroit on April 4 at Reese Stadium. Yale broke open a 5-5
game in the second with three straight and pulled away for good.
The Bulldogs had the advantage in shots (36-28), ground balls
(44-29) and face-offs (13-10), but the Titans never stopped
fighting back despite falling behind by three goals three times in
the second half. Johnathan Falcone didn't make a save in the
first 15 minutes but had 10 the rest of the way.
10-0 RUN LEADS TO WIN OVER PENN
Yale jumped out to a 10-0 run before giving up two quick ones
just before halftime. Those tallies were too little and too late,
but Penn did make a run before falling 16-14. Brian Douglass had
seven goals and one assist to lead the offense. Brendan Gibson
pitched in three goals and three assists, while his goalie,
Johnathan Falcone, came up with 14 stops. Both teams had four
extra-man tallies but Penn managed to take the final shot (48-38),
ground ball (39-37) and face-off (17-16) totals while successfully
clearing all 22 attempts. The Quakers won these statistical
categories in the last 30 minutes.
IVY PLAYERS OF THE WEEK GO HEAD TO HEAD
Yale junior attackman Brian Douglass (Waccabuc, N.Y.) was named
co-Ivy League Player of the Week after posting the two best
goal-scoring performances in the league this season in back-to-back
games last weekend. His 13 goal-output in those two games was a
tally more than he put on the scoreboard in 13 games last spring.
Saturday he goes against the goalie he shared the honors with,
Dartmouth's Fergus Campbell (23 saves in win against
Cornell).
ELI OFFENSE
Four Yale players have hit double digits in goals. Junior A
Brian Douglass has a team-high 24 and ranks sixth in Division I
with three per game. Sophomore A Matt Gibson leads the Elis with 32
points while senior captain Brendan Gibson has 15-9-24. Sophomore M
Gregory Mahony cracked double-digits with his 10th goal
last weekend.
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Junior goalie Johnathan Falcone made 24 saves on a busy weekend
and now has 68 for the season. His 9.61 GAA is 24th in
Division I.
FACE-OFF
Senior M Max Rodman is 17th in the country with a
.576 face-off mark. He took all 33 face-offs against Penn.
That's one reason rookie Cole Yeager (.632) got the chance to
shine against Detroit and won nine of 13.
GROUND BALLS
Junior LSM Patrick Coleman leads the Blue with 29 pick-ups.
Freshman D Michael McCormack is second with 25.
TEAM RANKINGS
Yale is ninth in faceoffs (.570), ninth in ground balls (35),
15th in scoring offense (11.25) and 21st in team defense
(9.6) among Division I squads.
2010 HONORS
Yale sophomore Matt Gibson was named March 8 co-Ivy League
Player of the Week after an 11-point weekend in a pair of
victories. Gibson led the Elis to a 13-12 win over No. 12 UMass on
March 5 with a career-high 5-3-8. Brian Douglass got the nod on
April 5 after a 13-goal, 14-point weekend set against Penn and
Detroit.
BIG GREEN
The organizers of the New England Lacrosse Classic could not
have imagined anything other than an Ivy mismatch when Cornell took
on Dartmouth last Saturday at Gillette Stadium. Sophomore Fergus
Campbell, a New Cannan native, provided the surprise of the Ivy
season when he stopped 23 shots to help the Green beat the No. 6
Red 8-6. Senior captain Ari
Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) netted four goals. It was the first
win over Cornell in 13 years.
IVY POWER
Five of the seven Ivy League teams are currently listed in the
USILA top 20 poll. League teams were 1-2 out of the Ivy last week.
Duke beat Brown 11-10 on March 30 and then knocked off Harvard 14-5
on April 2. In other Ivy action last week, Princeton defeated Brown
9-7.
ON THE BENCH
Yale head coach Andy Shay is in his seventh season and brings a
41-47 overall record into Saturday's contest. Shay, a
two-time captain at LeMoyne College, was part of two UMass NCAA
Quarterfinals teams as an assistant coach before coming to Yale.
COACH NOTES
Yale assistant Graham Niemi, a former Maryland standout, served
as head coach of Team Finland at the 2009 World
Championships… Andy Shay has coached the Irish National
team… Eli assistant Ryan Polley played basketball and
lacrosse (2nd team All-America) at Merrimack.
BULLDOG BITES
Nobody in Division I has had a better goal-producing weekend set
than Brian Douglass in 2010, and only one other player in the
country has more goals in consecutive games this year. The
junior's 13 goals topped his 2009 total. His seven tallies
against Penn are the most since Jon Reese had 10 against Army in
1990… Yale has outshot and outscored opponents in all but
the fourth quarter… The Elis have nine extra-man goals in 41
attempts and four of those came against Penn.

ROSTER SPREAD
The Yale roster includes players from 17 states and two
provinces. The most are from New York (9), New Jersey (5) and
Pennsylvania (4). None of the 11 members of the class of 2013 hail
from the same state or province.
REESE RENOVATIONS
The renovation of Reese Stadium, scheduled for completion this
summer, will provide a state-of –the-art facility for both
Yale lacrosse and soccer teams. The renovations include increased
stadium seating, an entry plaza, team rooms and a press box. Recent
improvements included a FieldTurf surface and improved lighting.
Reese Stadium, formerly known as the Yale Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium,
is named after former lacrosse players Jason Reese '87 and Jon
Reese '90.
BULLDOGS VS. CANCER
The Yale lacrosse team is organizing a day to raise money for
“Everyone Works for Jack!” This is an endeavor to
support Jack McGetrick, the head lacrosse coach at Bellarmine
University who is battling cancer. On April 24, the Bulldogs
(players and coaches) will have a Noon to 1:30 youth clinic at
Reese Stadium before hosting Bryant in a 7 p.m. game. A donation to
the fund is suggested in lieu of admittance to both events.
Everyone Works For Jack! is the intercollegiate men's
lacrosse coaches association's initial effort to establish a
coaches emergency fund that will be available to members of the
coaching community when they are in financial need. McGetrick
has been the head coach at Bellarmine since its inception in 2004.
He spent 11 years as the head coach at the University of Hartford
and was named 1997 national coach-of-the-year by the USILA.
McGetrick has had a large influence on young boys and men playing
youth, high school and collegiate lacrosse on and off the field.
The IMLCA is now working to give back and help McGetrick during
this time of need.
HELMET ROSE
Yale is one of a few schools in the country wearing a Rose
sticker on its helmets in honor of Paul Rose, a lacrosse coach at
four different colleges, who passed away on March 27 after a long
battle with cancer.
