Sumiyasu Makes 11 Saves For Bulldogs
DURHAM, N.C. – Yale goalkeeper Ayana Sumiyasu has had some of her best performances against top
competition. Her career-high of 15 saves came against UConn last
year. She also has shutouts in her career against Santa Clara and
St. John's. Sumiyasu was on her game again on Sunday against
No. 14 Duke, finishing with 11 saves, but the one shot the Blue
Devils got past her proved to be the difference. Mady Haller scored
her first goal of the season midway through the first half to lift
Duke to a 1-0 victory on a warm afternoon at Koskinen Stadium.
The game-winning goal came off a corner kick. Mollie Pathman
sent a cross into the box where Haller headed it past Sumiyasu at
29:32.
Sumiyasu was busy from the start. She made five saves in the
first 16 minutes of the game. Enma Mullo had
Yale's first scoring chance in the 18th minute but her shot
went wide.
The Bulldogs (1-3) had a good chance to tie just after
Haller's goal, but Tara Campbell stopped Becky Brown's shot.
Yale had a flurry of activity around the Duke goal late in the
second half. Campbell deflected Mullo's shot over the end
line. On the ensuing corner kick, Juliann Jeffrey
had a shot blocked, and Campbell got a piece of a Miyuki Hino shot that led to another corner kick. Jeffrey got off
a shot moments later but it went wide.
Duke (5-1-1) outshot Yale 30-7 and had an 8-3 edge in corner
kicks.
The Bulldogs get another crack at an ACC school on Wednesday
night when they play at fifth-ranked Boston College. Kickoff is
slated for 7 p.m.
