PHILADELPHIA – The depth of the Yale women's crew was on display in Saturday's season-opening races against Penn and Columbia. The Bulldogs' second varsity, varsity four and second varsity four were all victorious. Columbia won the varsity eight, topping second-place Yale by five seconds.
"Our lower boats raced well," said Yale head coach Will Porter. "We do not have a varsity eight yet. We have to keep trying to find the right combination, but we will put our heads down and get to work."
The second varsity turned in the most impressive performance of the day, cruising to a nearly 20-second victory over second-place Columbia. Yale finished in 6:28.0.
The varsity four had a time of 7:17.4, nearly seven seconds faster than Columbia.
The second varsity four had a similar margin of victory. The Bulldogs finished in 7:21.7 to Columbia's 7:29.5.
Penn captured the third varsity eight with a time of 6:55.3. Yale came in at 7:11.2.
The Bulldogs race Cornell next Saturday in Ithaca.
