DERBY, Conn. – The spring season is about at the halfway mark so Saturday's Yale-Princeton regatta was a good gauge of where the two perennial Ivy League title contenders stand heading down the stretch. It was the seventh-ranked Tigers that made the big statement. Princeton won all five races, including the varsity eight to retain the Eisenberg Cup, on the Housatonic River.
"Princeton is as fast a crew as there is right now," said Yale head coach Will Porter. "They are the standard. Now we have to see if we can close the gap."
The closest race of the day was in the varsity four. Princeton finished with a time of 7:13.5, a little over three seconds faster than the Bulldogs. It was the first loss of the season for Yale's varsity four.
In the varsity eight, Princeton won by nearly nine seconds, 6:08.6 to 6:17.2
The Tigers' margin of victory was similar in the second varsity. Princeton finished in 6:19.6 to Yale's 6:26.8.
The Tigers also won comfortably in the third varsity eight and second varsity four.
"We raced hard, but we just are not up to speed yet," Porter said.
The Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday when they race Radcliffe on the Charles River in Boston.
