NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The No. 3 Yale Bulldogs triumphed 5-4 against No. 4 St. Lawrence in the Brady Friday night, handing the Saints their first loss of the season.
St. Lawrence (8-1) came into the game looking to climb in the rankings, but the Bulldogs (8-1) rallied after Wednesday's close loss to No. 1 Trinity and asserted their position as one of the top three teams in the country.
Yale got off to a 2-0 lead with victories from sophomore Zachary Leman at No. 3 and freshman Liam McClintock at No. 6. However, St. Lawrence proved tough competition, swapping matches back and forth to tie the contest 3-3 with three left to play.
Freshman Thomas Dembinski took care of his opponent in straight sets to give Yale a 4-3 lead, turning attention to the battle in the No. 8 position between Yale senior Eric Caine and St. Lawrence junior Chris Fernandez. Down 2-1 Caine fought his way to a 12-10 victory in the fourth game, tying the match at two games apiece. In the fifth and deciding game, Caine prevailed 11-8, giving the Elis their fifth win and clinching the match for Yale.
The win rewarded Yale's strong play and should give the squad a boost heading into tomorrow's matches. The Bulldogs will return to the Brady Squash Center Saturday to face No. 9 Western Ontario at 11:30 a.m. before taking on No. 14 Navy at 4 p.m.
