PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Yale men's and women's squash teams are set to compete at the CSA Championships from March 5-8 at the Arlen Specter U.S. Squash Center. The men's team earned the No. 5 seed and will match up against No. 12 Williams in the first round. The women's squad earned the No. 8 seed and will play Drexel in the opening round.
The men's squad comes into the national championship event with a 6-5 record. The Bulldogs qualified for the inaugural Ivy League Tournament, falling to No. 1 Penn in the semifinals. Last season, Yale reached the CSA finals, ultimately falling to the Quakers and finishing as the national runner-up.
Tad Carney has been outstanding at the No. 1 position for the Bulldogs. He has compiled an 8-3 record against some of the top competition in the nation. The sophomore duo of Rohan Arya Gondi and Rishi Srivastava has been strong in the middle of the lineup, tallying eight and seven wins, respectively. Junior Lachlan Sutton has performed well this season and reached the round of 16 at the CSA Individual Championships in January. First-year Oliver Velasco has also been a factor in his debut season.
If the Bulldogs win against Williams in the opening round, they will play No. 4 Virginia on Friday, March 6, at 10:30 a.m.
The women's team enters the CSA Championships with a 3-7 overall record. All of its losses have come against teams ranked in the top eight nationally. The Bulldogs will square off with Drexel for the second time this season. The team previously defeated the Dragons 6-3 on Dec. 6.
The team is led by sophomore Heng Wai Wong at the No. 1 position. Wong reached the semifinals at the CSA Individual Championships and earned first-team All-Ivy League honors this season. Classmate Spring Ma has been strong at the No. 2 spot, earning second-team All-Ivy League honors.
The winner of the matchup between the Bulldogs and the Dragons will play No. 1 Princeton in the CSA quarterfinals on Friday, March 6, at 3 p.m.
