Late Goal Lifts Cornell Over Yale

Box Score

ITHACA, N.Y. – The character of the Yale men's soccer team was on display again Saturday at Cornell.

After yielding a goal with 8:48 left that put the Big Red in front 1-0, the Bulldogs' response was impressive. Yale applied constant pressure on Cornell's goal but wasn't able to get the equalizer despite firing four shots at the goal.

"There is no quit in this group," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. "Today they deserved better."

It was the sixth 1-0 loss of the season for the Bulldogs (1-9-2, 0-3 Ivy).

The only goal came after the ball pin-balled in the box to Conor Goepel, who fired a shot into the top corner.

Ollie Iselin had two shots, and Cameron Kirdzik and Conner Lachenbruch also had opportunities in the final five minutes.

"This is one of the toughest places to play in the Ivy League," Tompkins said. "We knew we would have do our work in the trenches, and I thought we did a tremendous job of that. I feel bad for our guys. They gave a tremendous effort and stuck to the game plan."

Cornell (8-4-1, 1-2 Ivy) finished with a 16-15 edge in shots, but the Bulldogs had seven of the game's nine corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Blake Brown played well, finishing with eight saves.

After playing their first three league games on the road, the Bulldogs finally get a home game next Saturday. Yale hosts Penn at 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
