Box Score STORRS, Conn. – Another very solid effort ended in heartbreak for the Yale men's soccer team. Despite missing several key players due to illness and injury, the Bulldogs played perennial national power UConn even for 103 minutes before Adria Beso Marco scored in the second overtime period to lift the Huskies to a 1-0 victory before a crowd of 2,241 at Morrone Stadium.
The winning goal came when Beso Marco corralled a clearing attempt and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net with just seven minutes remaining.
"It took a special moment from a special player to separate the teams at the end," said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins.
It was the seventh 1-0 defeat of the season for the Bulldogs (1-10-3).
Despite the outcome, Tompkins was proud of his team.
"I was really pleased with our guys' fantastic effort," he said. "We showed a lot of grit and determination and our tactical discipline was really good."
The Bulldogs were again strong defensively, limiting their opponent to one goal or less for the fourth straight game.
"We wanted to play a disciplined defensive game to try and frustrate them," Tompkins said. "I thought we executed our game plan very well."
UConn (8-6-2) outshot Yale 23-5.
Goalkeeper Blake Brown was strong for the Bulldogs, finishing with five saves.
"It may have been Blake's best game of the season," Tompkins said.
Yale returns to Ivy League play on Saturday, hosting Columbia at 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
