Box Score Leonoff Makes 32 Saves
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - St. Lawrence cooled off the Yale women's ice hockey team's red-hot offense Friday night at Ingalls Rink, blanking the Bulldogs 3-0 behind 28 saves from Carmen MacDonald. The Saints got goals from three different players, including the game-winner from Kennedy Marchment.
Marchment scored on a wrister from the right circle at 10:03 of the first, putting Yale in the rare position of trailing. The Bulldogs had been behind for a total of less than 10 minutes all last weekend as they romped to 6-2 and 5-2 wins vs. Providence. On Friday night, St. Lawrence (4-3-1, 1-1-0 ECAC Hockey) built on its lead shortly after senior goalie Jaimie Leonoff made a great save on forward Brooke Webster, who tried to bury the puck at 7:50 after getting a between-the-legs pass on a 2-on-1. Five minutes later, after a faceoff in the Yale zone, the Saints worked the puck over to defender Megan Armstrong for a shot that made it 2-0 Saints.
The second period was scoreless, thanks in part to some more great saves by Leonoff. With less than seven minutes remaining she denied forward Jacqueline Wand on a breakaway, and with four minutes to play she stopped Webster right at the doorstep.
With no power plays all game, the Bulldogs had to find other ways to generate offense. Late in the third, shortly after Leonoff kicked away a tough wrister by forward Jenna Marks, she headed to the bench in favor of an extra attacker. But shortly after MacDonald made one of her best saves of the night, stopping a chance from right in front by freshman forward Eden Murray, the Saints gained control of the puck and forward Kailee Heidersbach sent it into the empty net for the 3-0 final.
Leonoff finished with 32 saves, helping Yale limit St. Lawrence to an 0-for-2 performance on the power play.
Yale (2-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC Hockey) hosts No. 9 Clarkson, the defending national champions, Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
