Schlesier Stops 15, but No. 9 Stanford Beats Yale 3-0

Seventh Shutout of Season for Cardinal

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After allowing a goal just 71 seconds into the game vs. No. 9 Stanford on Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field, the Yale field hockey team had to regroup quickly. The Cardinal was coming off a 3-1 win at No. 2 UConn -- the defending national champions -- and had already scored four or more goals in a game three times this season. Behind 15 saves from senior goalkeeper Heather Schlesier Yale was able to keep Stanford from doing too much more scoring Sunday, but the Cardinal still came away with a 3-0 victory. This was Stanford's seventh shutout of the season.

After being held without a penalty corner in the UConn game, Stanford (10-1, 1-0 NorPac) got one just a minute into Sunday's game and converted immediately. Defender Jessica Chisholm's goal came on a straight shot and put Stanford up 1-0 at 1:11.

While the Cardinal controlled play for most of the rest of the half, Schlesier allowed only one more goal and made seven saves in the half.

Yale got its first penalty corner of the game as time expired in the half, but a shot by sophomore midfielder Kelsey Nolan was blocked and Stanford went into the half up 2-0.

Another Stanford goal early in the second half, this one by attacker Elise Ogle at 38:52, came shortly after Schlesier made a nice save on a penalty corner shot by Chisholm.

Neither team scored the rest of the way. Stanford keeper Dulcie Davies, who entered the weekend leading the nation in save percentage and goals-against average, made her best save of the day by charging out and sliding to block a shot by senior forward Jessie Accurso with 25 minutes to play. Davies (three saves) was replaced by Maddy Belin (one save) for the final 15:40.

As they did at the end of the first half, the Bulldogs got a corner as time expired in the second half, but Nolan's shot went wide to seal the shutout.

Yale (1-7, 0-2 Ivy League) returns to Ivy League play with a game at Cornell next Saturday at Noon.
