ITHACA, N.Y. — No. 4 Yale picked up a 6-3 victory against No. 6 Cornell on Sunday in a closely fought Ivy League battle. The result gave the Bulldogs their third win of the week and improved Yale's record to 4-0 overall with two wins and no losses in conference play.
Cornell (5-1, 2-1 Ivy) presented the biggest test the team has faced this year, but the Bulldogs persevered to hand their hosts their first loss of the season in an exciting match.
Yale took four of the top five matches, but Cornell's Danielle Letourneau snatched a win at No. 1 against sophomore Jenny Scherl. The Big Red also triumphed at Nos. 6 and 7.
The two tightest matches of the day turned the tide in favor of the Bulldogs. In the ninth spot, junior Georgia Blatchford wore down Cornell's Reut Odinak to win in five games (12-10, 8-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6). Sophomore Shiyuan Mao came through with a dramatic win at No. 5 in which she overcame a 2-0 deficit to eke out a victory (10-12, 8-11, 11-7, 13-11, 11-9).
Yale will return to New Haven feeling good about today's result, which demonstrated the team's ability to bear down and win a close contest over a tough opponent on the road. The Bulldogs will hope to replicate their three-win week next weekend, as they prepare to face No. 7 Stanford, No. 16 Middlebury and No. 20 St. Lawrence.
