NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A fighting effort from the Yale men's squash team could not prevent a 6-3 defeat at the hands of top-ranked St. Lawrence on Sunday at the Brady Squash Center.
Yale (4-2, 1-1 Ivy) came into the match in form after Saturday's 6-3 victory over No. 3 Rochester. Sunday's match saw a reversal of the scoreboard, however, as the Bulldogs could not overcome a talented St. Lawrence squad that improved its record to 8-1 on the year.
The closely contested match could have gone either way, but Yale came out on the wrong end of a few close games that tilted the result in St. Lawrence's favor.
In the top spot, sophomore
Thomas Dembinksi pushed his opponent hard, but ultimately fell in four games to St. Lawrence's Moustafa Bayoumy, a skilled adversary who finished last season as the fifth-ranked player in the nation. Freshman
Pierson Broadwater also came up just short in a five-game loss in the eighth slot.
One of the best individual performances of the day came from sophomore Liam McClintock. After losing his first two games at No. 4, McClintock made some adjustments and stormed back for a 3-2 victory that epitomized the determination the Bulldogs showed throughout the day.
Yale's tough stretch of matches will continue next week as it meets yet another top-five opponent, No. 2 Trinity. The Bulldogs can take many positives from today's showing and will look to translate their improvement into success on Wednesday.
