Box Score Goals for Raines, Tarrant
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Forward Janice Yang notched the game-winning goal 48 seconds into overtime to give the Brown women's ice hockey team a 3-2 win over Yale Friday night at Meehan Auditorium. The Bears won despite being outshot by Yale 49-26, as Brown goalie Monica Elvin's 47 saves were crucial to the come-from-behind victory.
Yale (8-11-1, 5-8-0 ECAC Hockey) outshot Brown (5-15-0, 2-11-0 ECAC Hockey) 20-5 in the first period, and spent nearly four minutes on the power play, but when the first intermission arrived the game was still scoreless. Senior goaltender Jaimie Leonoff's fifth and final save of the period came in the final minute when she smothered a short-handed shot from forward Sarah Robson.
The Bulldogs earned a penalty shot less than two minutes into the second when a Brown player covered up a loose puck in the crease. But Elvin continued to vex Yale, getting her left leg out just far enough to deny the attempt by sophomore forward Krista Yip-Chuck.
The Bears then went ahead 1-0 at 5:35 of the second. After a turnover deep in the Yale zone, Leonoff had to come out to make a great save on forward Sam Donovan. But as Leonoff and Donovan both fell to the ice, Donovan was barely able to get her stick on the rebound as it trickled behind Leonoff, pushing the puck over the goal line for the lead.
Yale caught a tough break when a wrister by junior forward Jamie Haddad hit the post and deflected away with 11 minutes to play in the second. But less than three minutes later -- operating from behind the net after chasing down a rebound of her own shot -- Haddad fed Raines in front for a one-timer that tied the game 1-1. And less than two minutes after that, sophomore forward Gretchen Tarrant stickhandled her way past the defense to fire in the go-ahead goal after swooping in to grab a long pass from the Yale zone that bounced off the boards as a Yale player and a Brown player collided. Freshman defenseman Grace Wickens and freshman forward Eden Murray assisted on the play.
Leonoff made two of her toughest saves in the final four minutes of the second period. On the first, forward Brittany Moorehead tried to go five-hole on a 2-on-1 but was denied by the Yale netminder. With Yale killing a penalty 90 seconds later, a pass from the side of the net found Moorehead all alone in front, but Leonoff was once again able to stop her and keep the lead intact.
A slap shot by sophomore defenseman Taylor Marchin dinged off the post less than two minutes into the third period, and the Bears soon took advantage of the reprieve. A 5-on-3 enabled Brown to tie the game with 12:54 to play, as defenseman Lauren Vella set up forward Maddie Woo for the goal.
Both teams had chances to win late in regulation. Leonoff used her blocker to turn aside a shot by forward Samantha Swanstrom on a 2-on-1 with 10 minutes left, and two minutes later she made a kick save to deny Woo and keep the game tied.
Yip-Chuck drew a penalty on the Bears to give Yale a power play with 5:26 remaining in the game, but the Bulldogs were unable to convert. With less than a minute to play Brown had a 2-on-1 developing, but freshman defenseman Mallory Souliotis hit the ice to break up the play and the teams headed to overtime.
Yang ended things quickly in the extra session. After a save by Leonoff (her 23rd), Swanstrom batted the rebound over to Yang and she knocked it in to end the game. The win ended a nine-game losing streak for the Bears.
The same two teams meet Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Rink.
