HARTFORD, Conn. — Yale men's squash advanced to the consolation finals at the CSA National Championships with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over No. 8 Penn on Saturday.
This postseason meeting produced a more dramatic result than the regular season encounter with the Quakers on Jan. 31 at the Brady Squash Center, in which the Bulldogs notched a comfortable 7-2 win.
Yale faced a 2-1 deficit after the first wave of matches, but rallied in the second set to even the tally as sophomore Thomas Dembinski grabbed a 3-0 win at No. 2 and freshman Pierson Broadwater came out of a five-game battle victorious at No. 8. Freshman Max Martin suffered his second close loss in as many days despite a strong effort in the fifth spot.
Junior No. 1 Sam Fenwick dropped a nail-biter at the top of the lineup (7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 13-11) but senior captain Joseph Roberts and freshman Edward Columbia secured wins at Nos. 7 and 4 to seal the match for the Bulldogs.
In its final team match of the season, Yale will take on No. 6 Rochester, who defeated No. 7 Franklin and Marshall earlier today. When the two teams met in the regular season, the Bulldogs won 6-3. Sunday's contest will begin at 1:30 p.m.
