Box Score Weisenbach Has Three More Hits For Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Camille Weisenbach continued her torrid hitting but the Yale softball team ran into a powerful UMass squad and dropped its home opener 16-6 at Dewitt Family Field.
Weisenbach was 3-for-3 and knocked in pair of runs to lead the Bulldogs (4-9). Over her last three games, Weisenbach is 8-for-10 (.800) with two doubles and seven RBI, and on the season is now hitting .444.
Hannah Brennan also had two hits for Yale.
UMass (6-15) banged out 17 hits, including two home runs, against three Bulldog pitchers.
Because the game was originally scheduled to be played at UMass, Yale batted first. That benefitted the Bulldogs as they scored twice in the opening inning. Sydney Glover walked and advanced to second on Brittany Labbadia's sacrifice bunt. Sarah Onorato followed with a single up the middle that scored Glover, and Weisenbach then singled home Onorato.
UMass, though, answered with four runs in the second inning and then broke the game open with an eight-run third inning.
Still, Yale refused to go away. The Bulldogs scored four times in the fourth. Weisenbach was again in the middle of the rally, delivering an RBI single. Yale also benefitted from a pair of UMass errors. Brennan and Carolyn McGuire had hits in the inning as well.
UMass again had a response, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth. The big blow was Bridget Lemire's three-run homer that went just inside the left-field foul pole.
The Bulldogs finished with seven hits and drew three walks in the game but left six runners on base.
Yale returns to Ivy League play on Friday, hosting a doubleheader with Columbia. The first pitch of the first game is slated for 2 p.m. The Bulldogs host a twinbill against Penn on Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m.
