Rain Thwarts Yale's Bid For Doubleheader Split With Princeton

Box Score 1

Second Game Suspended With Bulldogs Leading 5-0 In Fifth

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bulldogs appeared well on their way to knocking off Princeton in the second game of an Ivy League doubleheader at Class of 1895 Field when Mother Nature stepped in. Heavy winds and rain forced the game to be stopped with Yale in front 5-0 and one out in the top of the fifth inning.

After an hour or so delay the decision was made to suspend the game, which will be completed next week only if it is has a bearing on first place in the South Division. The Tigers (16-22, 8-7 Ivy) enter the final weekend of play one game behind first-place Penn in the loss column. Princeton plays four games at Cornell, while Penn has back-to-back doubleheaders against Columbia.

If it isn't necessary, the game won't be finished and the result and statistics won't count. That would be unfortunate for the Bulldogs, particularly Camille Weisenbach, who had two hits, including a home run, and three RBI. Sarah Onorato and Sydney Glover also had two hits.

Princeton won the first game 2-0. Pitcher Shanna Christian limited Yale to one hit, an infield single by Rachel Paris with two out in the top of the seventh.

It was a far different story in the second game before the rain came. The Bulldogs (9-21, 3-12 Ivy) scored four runs in the third inning. Glover started the rally with an infield single. Allison Skinner then laid down a bunt. Princeton tried for the force out at second but Glover beat the throw. After Lauren Delgadillo walked to load the bases, Onorato delivered an RBI single, and Weisenbach's double to left-center cleared the bases.

Weisenbach's homer to left-center in the fifth gave Yale a 5-0 lead.

Lindsay Efflandt sailed through the first four innings in the circle, yielding only two hits.

Despite being limited to one hit in the first game, Yale had chances against Christian. Skinner and Delgadillo were both hit by pitches in the first inning, Skinner drew a two-out walk in the third and Weisenbach reached on a two-out error in the sixth.

The Tigers scored both of their runs in the first inning, one of which was unearned.

Pitcher Francesca Casalino allowed only two hits the rest of the way and had two strikeouts.

The Bulldogs play a four-game series with Brown this weekend. The first two games are Friday at Dewitt Family Field on Friday at 2 p.m. Yale's four seniors – Onorato, Hannah Brennan, Riley Hughes and Kylie Williamson – will be honored before the first pitch. The teams then play a doubleheader at Brown on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
