Yale Narrowly Falls to Marshall 4-3 in Consolation Match

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - On Saturday, the Yale women's tennis team competed against No. 52 Marshall on the second day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kick-Off Weekend hosted by North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C. Although the Bulldogs were ahead 3-1, Marshall came back to win 4-3.

Marshall took an early lead after securing the doubles point. Although senior Madeleine Hamilton and junior Tina Jiang were defeated by Derya Turhan and Rachael Morales 6-1, senior captain Ree Ree Li and sophomore Valerie Shklover fought to a 6-2 victory over Anna Pomyatinskaya and Maddie Silver. Junior Caroline Lynch and sophomore Carol Finke played a tight match against Marija Bogicevic and Anne Gulsrud but ultimately lost 6-4 to give Marshall the doubles point.

Despite Marshall's early lead, Yale responded well with three straight singles wins. Sophomore Elizabeth Zordani only dropped two games in her 6-2, 6-0 win over Gulsud to tie the match 1-1. Finke also achieved a straight sets win, defeating Bogicevic 6-4, 6-2, and senior Courtney Amos won her first set 6-4 against Pomyatinskya before Pomyatinskya pulled out due to an injury, putting Yale one point away from the win.

The Bulldogs were on track to secure the last point, as Jiang, Ree Ree Li and junior Sherry Li each won the first set of their respective matches, but their opponents all managed to come back to secure Marshall's narrow 4-3 win over Yale.

Yale will travel to Hanover, N.H in two weeks to compete at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships, which will take place from Feb. 5 to Feb. 7.
