Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Four different Bulldogs scored goals Friday afternoon at Ingalls Rink as the Yale women's ice hockey team came away with a 4-1 win over Brown. The win, Yale's third straight, came on "White Out for Mandi" day at Ingalls Rink as the Bulldogs paid tribute to former Yale women's ice hockey player Mandi Schwartz '10 (1988-2011) and her battle with cancer.
A large and vocal crowd showed up to support the Bulldogs and their cause, and they all had plenty to cheer about.
Yale grabbed a 1-0 lead with just 39 seconds left in the first. Sophomore defenseman Mallory Souliotis sent the puck towards the net and senior forward Jamie Haddad's deflection attempt went wide, but the puck hit off the boards behind the Brown goal and senior forward Janelle Ferrara picked it up. She then fooled Brown goalie Monica Elvin with a wraparound, sliding the puck in for her team-leading eighth goal of the year.
"When you score right at the end of the period it always give you some added momentum heading into the next period," said Joakim Flygh, Yale's Susan Cavanagh Head Coach of Women's Ice Hockey. "We generated some really good opportunities in that period but didn't hit the back of the net until the end. Janelle has worked hard on her shot, and taken it upon herself to finish her chances."
The Bulldogs just missed out on extending their lead on a power play midway through the second, when a shot by junior forward Krista Yip-Chuck hit the post. But four minutes later Yale was right back at it on offense, and this time got one past Elvin. After freshman forward Emma Vlasic won a faceoff in the Brown zone, sophomore defenseman Kara Drexler sent the puck across to Souliotis. She skated around a Brown defender and put a shot on net that Elvin stopped, but the rebound went to a wide-open sophomore forward Brittany Wheeler to stuff in for her second goal of the season.
"That line, with Brittany, Emma and [junior forward] Gretchen Tarrant, played hard and gave us energy," said Flygh. "When we can get a +1 game from them it's a huge benefit."
That gave Yale a 2-0 lead at 11:48, and the score remained that way through the end of the second.
Yale (7-13-1, 7-7-1 ECAC Hockey) then finished the game strong, scoring twice in the first five minutes of the third period. Haddad got the first, working a give-and-go with Yip-Chuck to perfection for her seventh goal of the year. Sophomore forward Eden Murray also assisted on the play. Junior forward Phoebe Staenz then scored a short-handed goal at 4:39, following up her own rebound after a set-up from Drexler.
Brown (3-17-2, 1-12-2 ECAC Hockey) scored during a 5-on-3 with 2:22 left in the game to avoid the shutout, as forward Maddie Woo slapped one past Yale junior goalie Hanna Mandl. That was the lone blemish on the day for the Yale netminder, as she finished with 20 saves. Elvin made 31 stops.
The same two teams meet Saturday at 3:00 p.m. on the Ivy League Digital Network.
