NEW HAVEN, Conn — The women of Yale Squash brought the season to an exciting finish on Sunday morning with a 5-4 win in the Howe Cup consolation final over Stanford at the Brady Squash Center.
The victory gave Yale a winning record on the weekend and a fifth-place finish overall.
The match was the final contest for Yale's seniors. Georgia Blatchford and Annie Ballaine both suffered losses, although Ballaine's came in a close five games.
Junior Shiyuan Mao mounted a comeback attempt to win her match at No. 3, coming back from a 2-1 deficit with back-to-back 11-5 victories.
Her fellow junior Jenny Scherl got off to a hot start, taking the opener 11-2 and going on to win in four games.
The Bulldogs received strong contributions again from the team's younger players. Two freshman, Selena Maity and Emily Sherwood, won matches for Yale; sophmore Jocelyn Lehman also pitched in a victory of her own.
The positive end to the year will hopefully set the tone for next season's squad. In addition, several Yale players will likely compete at the CSA individual championships next weekend.
Much of the squad remained at the Brady after the match to support their counterparts on the men's team as they defeated Rochester 5-4 to win the national championship.
