First Blemish This Spring
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The best from the West lined up against the East's premier boat in the men's varsity eight grand final of the 2016 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA), and the West came out on top by just under two seconds. California edged Yale for the national championship on Mercer Lake this morning.
The Golden Bears, who never trailed in the 2,000 meter sprint, came in at 5:38.71. The Bulldogs, rowing out of lane 7, finished 5:40.70 and had to overcome a boat-length deficit to make it a contest for the Varsity Challenge Cup.
The Elis, who face their rival a week from today in the 151st edition of the Yale-Harvard Regatta, were defeated for the first time in 2016. They had taken all the regular-season events, captured the San Diego Crew Classic and finished on top at the Sprints for a second straight season. Today, the Blue was searching for a title that had narrowly eluded them in 2015.
Princeton made a late rush to finish third at 5:41.88 and come in ahead of Washington (5:44.46) with Harvard and Brown trailing.
In other events involving Eli oarsmen, Yale's second varsity (5:53.44) won the petite final by edging out Cornell, while the third boat was third in its petite final. The Bulldogs also had a four rowing on Sunday and it finished fourth in a fourth-level final.
The IRA also keeps track of team standings, where Yale was fifth overall with 163 points. Cal won the Ten Eyck Award for overall supremacy at the three-day regatta.
