About the Regatta

  • This year marks the 159th running of the regatta between these two storied programs.
  • The first race was held in 1852 on Lake Winnipesaukee in Center Harbor, N.H.
  • "The Race" began when Yale challenged Harvard to "test the superiority of the oarsmen of the two colleges."
  • The regatta was first held on the Thames River in New London in 1878, and every race except five has been held there ever since.
  • After the inaugural race, a brief hiatus followed until Yale reissued the challenge in 1855.
  • The original two-mile distance later evolved into today's four-mile format.
