King Wins in Singles and Doubles as Yale Downs Monmouth, 4-0
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's tennis team hosted the second day of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships on Saturday, taking on No. 8 seed Monmouth in a first-round consolation match. Despite the strength of the opposition, the Elis excelled across the board and cruised to a perfect 4-0 victory. Among Saturday's top performers were seniors Fedor Andrienko and Stefan Doehler, who both earned straight-set singles wins; sophomore Dylan King notched impressive victories in singles and doubles.
Saturday's clash began with a round of doubles, and the Bulldogs asserted themselves immediately. Yale's Andrew Heller and Ziqi Wang were the first to finish, earning a dominant 6-0 victory over Monmouth's No. 3 team Sergio Martinez and Will Cooke-Wharton; this result improved the Bulldogs' record together to 3-1 on the season. Not long after, Yale's Nathan Brown and King clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Monmouth's Ale Gomez-Estrada and Srdjan Jakovljevic at No. 2 doubles. Although doubles play was cut short at that point, it should be noted that Andrienko and Doehler were also leading at the No. 1 spot.
After this comprehensive performance in doubles, the Elis came into singles play with confidence. Doehler started things off with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Monmouth's Alberto Giuffrida at No. 4 singles; this result improved senior captain's record to 5-2 in his last seven singles matches. King followed suit with a straight-set victory of his own at the No. 3 position, edging Monmouth's Gomez-Estrada 6-3, 6-3.
With the Bulldogs holding a firm 3-0 match lead, it was Andrienko who closed it out in a close match at No. 5 singles. Although his opponent, Sergio Martinez, managed to stay on serve for most of the match, Andrienko ultimately pulled away in both sets to win 6-4, 6-4. The Yale senior has started the spring in fine form, notching a 5-1 record in his first six singles matches.
Saturday's victory represents a huge boost for the Bulldogs, and improves their 2018 dual match record to 3-4. Yale will take the court once again tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Brown.
