Bulldogs Drop Doubleheader To Harvard

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – It was a special day for the Yale softball program as the 5K Corral Field at DeWitt Family Stadium was officially unveiled with a doubleheader against Harvard. The renovated facility features a state-of-the-art Field Turf playing surface. In addition, enhancements have been made to the bullpens, batting cages, outfield fence and dugouts.

The improvements were made possible thanks to the tremendous generosity of Karen Yarasavage and Kevin Genda, both Yale Class of 1987. Yarasavage, a four-time All-Ivy selection for the Bulldogs, including a three-time member of the first team, was on hand along with her daughters Kelsey and Kaylin and threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The large crowd that was on hand for the festivities was treated to an entertaining two games. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Harvard escaped with two victories, winning the first game 5-3 and taking the second game 10-4.

Shelby Kennedy, Madison Sack and Annie Tarte each had three hits on the day for Yale.

In the first game, the Crimson's Maddy Kaplan went 4-for-4 with three RBI. That was the start of a very big day for Kaplan, who was 3-for-4, including a home run, in the second game.

After Harvard jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the first game, Yale immediately answered on Allison Skinner's RBI single in the bottom of the first.

Harvard scored three times in the second, but the Bulldogs again had a response. Kortney Ponce singled and later scored on an error, and Kennedy and Giovy Webb executed a perfect double steal with Webb swiping home to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The Crimson tacked on a run in the third, and that was enough for pitcher Kathleen Duncan, who shut down Yale the rest of the way.

Miranda Papes was sharp in relief for the Bulldogs. She tossed 5.1 innings and did now allow an earned run.

Francesca Casalino got Yale off to quick start in the second game. Her two-run home run to right-center capped a three-run inning.

Tarte's single that scored Sydney Grobman gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead in the second inning, but the Crimson erupted for six runs in the fourth to seize control.

Kennedy was 3-for-4 with a run scored for Yale. Lindsay Kuss also had a hit.

The same two teams will play a single game on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
