Box Score 2 Solid Pitching, Timely Hitting Lead To Pair Of Victories
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's best day of the season led to a pair of very impressive victories. Terra Jerpbak and Francesca Casalino each tossed complete game shutouts, and the Bulldogs banged out 15 hits in two games en route to a doubleheader sweep of Cornell at 5K Corral Field at DeWitt Family Stadium. Yale won the first game 5-0 and took game two 4-0.
"What we had today was our team playing how we see them practice every day," said head coach Jen Goodwin. "Our pitchers had their best stuff against the strong Cornell bats, we had timely hitting throughout the lineup and our defense was solid. When all of our cylinders are firing, we are a great team."
Jerpbak was outstanding in the circle in the opener. She allowed only four hits and struck out two in earning her fourth win of the season.
Annie Tarte had two hits and knocked in a run, and Madison Sack belted a two-run home run to lead the offense.
The game was scoreless after three innings before the Bulldogs broke through in the fourth. Allison Skinner's one-out double started the rally, and Sydney Grobman followed with a triple to right field.
In the fifth, Yale added two runs. Giovy Webb's double scored Kortney Ponce, and Tarte delivered a clutch, two-out RBI single to center.
Sack's two-run blast into the future home of the Carol Roberts Fieldhouse capped the scoring in the sixth.
Yale's defense then put the finishing touch on the victory in the seventh, ending the game with a double play.
The Bulldogs didn't waste any time jumping on the board in the second game. Webb was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.
The Bulldogs added two more in the second. Carlin Hagmaier doubled home pinch runner Sydney Ginsberg for the first run and then Hagmaier scored on a passed ball.
That was more than enough for Casalino, who was dominant in the circle. Cornell's first hit didn't come until Bridgette Rooney led off the fifth inning with a double.
Casalino yielded only three hits and struck out two.
"I was pleased with the energy our team brought today," Goodwin said. "We played loose, had fun and played to our potential."
The same two teams meet again in a single game on Easter Sunday. The first pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m.
