Box Score Ponce Draw Bases Loaded Walk As Bulldogs Edge Brown 3-2
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's final home game of the 2018 season ended in thrilling fashion. Kortney Ponce drew a bases-loaded walk that forced home pinch runner Terra Jerpbak as the Bulldogs edged Brown 3-2 in nine innings on a gorgeous afternoon at 5K Corral Field at DeWitt Family Stadium.
Carlin Hagmaier started the winning rally with a double down the left field line, the only extra base hit of the game. The Bulldogs then used three quality at bats to earn the victory. Francesca Casalino worked a walk to put runners on first and second. After the second out, Jerpbak moved to third and Allison Skinner advanced to second on a wild pitch. Olivia Lee then drew the second walk of the inning to load the bases. Ponce worked the final walk to end the game.
That made a winner of first year pitcher Miranda Papes, who was outstanding in the circle for Yale. In nine innings, she allowed only five hits and struck out two.
Brown jumped out to an early 2-0 lead by scoring twice in the second inning.
Yale answered with two in the third to tie. Singles by Ponce, Sydney Ginsberg and Shelby Kennedy loaded the bases. Annie Tarte drove home the first run on a fielder's choice, and the second run came home when Brown second baseman Anya Schmitz couldn't handle a Sydney Grobman pop up.
The Bulldogs had a chance for more runs, but the Bears used a double play to end the inning.
From there, the pitchers took over.
Papes in one stretch retired eight straight hitters for the Bulldogs.
Brown starter Emily Waters retired the final six batters she faced, and Ladd set down the first six hitters she faced.
Yale took two of the three games from the Bears over the weekend.
The Bulldogs close out the season with a three-game series at Dartmouth next weekend.
