No. 21 Bulldogs Drop OT Heartbreaker To Defending NCAA Champion Maryland

Terps Score Winning Goal With 36 Second Left In First Extra Period

Fresh off a dominating 3-0 victory over No. 6 Indiana on Friday, Maryland seems to be gearing up for a run at a second straight NCAA championship. If that's the case, Yale can feel pretty good about what lies ahead this season as well.

The Bulldogs took the Terps to the brink before dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime decision in front of a crowd of 1,081 at Ludwig Field.

Maryland's Johannes Bergmann scored the winning goal with 36 seconds left in the first extra period. It came after the Terps were awarded a questionable corner kick. Yale defenders believed the ball went over the end line off a Maryland player.

"I'm extremely proud of the effort, and we definitely showed we can play at a top-25 level," said Kylie Stannard, The 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "It's a good sign that we are disappointed to not get a result against a program like Maryland's, and we will use this as more motivation, learn from it and get better."

Yale, ranked No. 21 in this week's College Soccer News top-30 national poll, outshot the Terps 9-8 and had a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.

"First of all, I have a lot of respect for the Maryland program and for what Coach Cirovski has done to help grow college soccer," Stannard said. "With that said I think Yale was the better team for the majority of the game tonight and deserved more."

Maryland is ranked No. 18.

The loss snapped the Bulldogs' nine-game winning streak and was the first of the season for Yale (9-1-2).

The Bulldogs, who sit all alone in first place in the Ivy League, appeared to take a 1-0 lead early in the first half. The assistant referee ruled a Yale shot crossed the goal line but was overruled by the center referee.

Nevertheless, it was a very strong first half for Yale, which had a 5-2 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks after 45 minutes.

The Bulldogs also had the edge in play for much of the second half.

"We forced Maryland to change their system and tactics and dictated how we wanted the game to be played," Stannard said. "To Maryland's credit, they finished the last few minutes of the game on top and were a little sharper during overtime."

Yale returns to Ivy play on Saturday at Penn. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
