For a large majority of the 104 minutes of soccer on Saturday against Penn, Yale was controlling play. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, one moment was all the Quakers needed to escape with a victory.
Â
Brandon Bartel converted a penalty kick at 104:19 to lift Penn to a 1-0 victory at Rhodes Field in Philadelphia. The kick came after Yale was whistled for a foul in the box.
Â
The loss was the first in Ivy League play for the Bulldogs, who fall to 3-1 but remain in first place.
Â
"We knew this was going to be a really difficult match against a really good Penn team," said
Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "Every game in the league is very tight. I thought we created some decent chances, but we lacked a little sharpness in our attacking third. I don't think we deserved to lose the game, especially on a judgement call. Unfortunately, it's part of the game, and we have to learn from it and make sure we find a way to get a result on the road."
Â
Yale, which is ranked No. 21 in the nation by College Soccer News and No. 24 by the United Soccer Coaches, is 9-2-2 overall.
Â
The Bulldogs finished with a 16-5 edge in shots. Penn (6-5-2, 2-1-1 Ivy) had only two shots on goal in the game.
Â
It was the second straight overtime loss for Yale, which fell to defending national champion Maryland 1-0 on Monday.
Â
The Bulldogs take a break from Ivy play on Tuesday, traveling to Northeastern. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. Yale then plays at Columbia next Saturday.
Â
"We will regroup and get back at it tomorrow and get ready for more road tests coming up," Stannard said.
