Yale will take a bunch of positive momentum into the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs, who clinched the Ivy League title last Saturday with a win over Brown, made a strong case for a first-round home game in a 2-1 road win at Princeton to close out the regular season.
Miguel Yuste and
Sigfus Arnason scored in the first half to lead the way.
Â
Yale, ranked No. 22 in this week's College Soccer News top-30 national poll, is 13-2-2 overall, has won four straight games and finishes Ivy League play 6-1. The 13 overall wins match the 1999 team for the most in school history and the six league victories tie the 1989 team for the most in Yale history.
Â
The Bulldogs only two losses this season both came in overtime – to defending national champion Maryland in a game where Yale had the edge in play and to Penn in a game where Yale outshot the Quakers 16-5.
Â
The Bulldogs will learn their NCAA Tournament opponent on Monday at 1 p.m. when the bracket is announced on NCAA.com.
"I think we have shown we are worthy to host a first-round game so hopefully things work out to play another game at Reese," said
Kylie Stannard, The 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "Either way, we are excited for the next opportunity."
Â
As they have many times this season, the Bulldogs jumped in front early when Yuste scored at 5:26. Arnason sent a cross into the box and Yuste left-footed it inside the near post.
Â
Arnason then gave Yale a two-goal lead when he finished a nice feed from
Mark Winhoffer.
Â
Princeton scored at 87:43 to pull within one.
Â
Elian Haddock was active in goal for the Bulldogs, finishing with seven saves.
"This wasn't our best performance tonight but we found a way to get the win against a very good Princeton team on the road," Stannard said. "They are an NCAA caliber team so this was a good test for us before starting the NCAA Tournament. The early goals were great, but I think we needed to manage the game better in the second half and control the ball better. The great thing is that we were able to get a solid rotation of players and come away healthy."
Â
The Tigers, who had hopes of earning an at-large NCAA Tournament bid, fell to 10-4-3 with the loss.
