NEWTON, Mass. – Yale's magical season came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Boston College scored three first-half goals and then withstood steady Bulldog pressure to earn a hard-fought 3-0 victory in front of a big crowd at the BC Soccer Complex that included a number of fans who made the trip from New Haven.
Yale ends one of the most successful seasons in school history with a 13-3-2 overall record. The 13 wins equals the school record set in 1999. The Bulldogs also won their first Ivy League title since 2005 and matched the best league record set by the 1989 team.
Yale was making the seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in school history and the first since 2005.
It was the final game for eight Yale seniors –
Andrew Bortey, Andrew Carton, Will Emerson, John Leisman, Justin Lobe, Ryan Matteo, Andrew Sady-Kennedy and
Miguel Yuste - who all made outstanding contributions to the program.
"It's always tough to end the season and especially when it's been such an amazing ride," said
Kylie Stannard, The 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "I'm so incredibly proud of this team and especially the seniors. They took a chance on me and a program that had one win the year before and were ranked 201 out of 206 Division I programs. They finish their careers with multiple program records, an Ivy League Championship, an NCAA Tourney berth and top-25 national ranking. They have not only moved the program forward, but they have set the bar and standards to a whole new level. I can't thank them enough and will miss this group very much."
The Eagles, who advance to meet Washington in the second round on Sunday, hadn't played since falling to Notre Dame 2-1 in overtime in the ACC Tournament on Nov. 5. BC appeared to make good use of the time off.
The three goals scored were the most allowed by the Bulldogs this season. Yale entered the game 10
th in the nation in goals against average.
Boston College (9-5-3) jumped in front at 15:45 when Kristofer Konradsson rifled a shot inside the near post from the top of the box.
It was the first time since the second game of the season at Colgate on Sept. 8 that Yale found itself trailing in the first half.
The Eagles then seized control by scoring twice in a 4:17 stretch late in the first half. Mike Suski tallied the first goal, one-timing a Tyshawn Rose cross in at 38:24. Stefan Sufurdarson then scored his eighth goal of the season at 42:41.
"Congratulations to Boston College and credit to them for a strong performance. We weren't quite ourselves tonight and struggled to settle into the game," Stannard said. "We had some uncharacteristic defensive miscues and BC did well to punish us and that put us in a hole which then forced us to chase the game. I'm proud of how we fought in the second half and competed until the end."
Yale outshot BC 7-4 in the second half but couldn't get one past goalkeeper Christian Garner, who finished with six saves.
