NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's basketball team continues its stretch of six straight road games with a pair in Massachusetts this week. The Bulldogs visit UMass Lowell Thursday (7:00 p.m.,
ESPN+) then head to Northeastern Saturday (1:00 p.m.,
FloHoops).
Last Game
Yale (1-1, 0-0 Ivy League) fell at Colgate 70-67 in overtime last Saturday. The Bulldogs trailed early, 13-6, but eventually rallied to take the lead in the second quarter. They got the lead up to 10 in the third quarter before Colgate rallied, forcing overtime by hitting a three-pointer with four seconds left in regulation. The Raiders outscored the Bulldogs 11-8 in OT for the win.
20 Point Club
Junior guard
Tori Andrew (St. Louis, Mo.) led Yale with 20 points in Saturday's game at Colgate. That was three shy of her career high. She joins senior guard
Roxy Barahman (Calabasas, Calif.), who had 23 points in the season-opening win vs. Quinnipiac, as Bulldogs who have reached the 20 point mark this season.
Block Party
Yale had nine blocks in Saturday's game at Colgate. That was their most in a game since blocking nine against Columbia Feb. 9, 2018. Sophomore forward
Camilla Emsbo (Lakewood, Colo.) led Yale with five blocks against the Raiders. That was the most blocks in a game by a Yale player since
Haywood Wright '10 had five blocks at Brown Jan. 15, 2010.
Improved Scoring Depth
After two games Yale has four players averaging at least 12.0 points per game:
Last year Yale only had one player average at least 12.0 points per game -- Barahman (18.6 ppg).
On the Road Again
These two games in Massachusetts are part of a stretch of six straight road games for Yale. The Bulldogs will play in three different states -- California, Massachusetts and New York -- while traveling approximately 6,600 miles in 17 days. The trip started with last weekend's game at Colgate. After Saturday's game at Northeastern, the Bulldogs will make a brief return to New Haven that night before departing for California on Sunday to play three games out west.
The Emma Golen Connection
Thursday's game brings Yale assistant coach
Emma Golen back to UMass Lowell, where she spent the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Both of Yale's upcoming games in Massachusetts bring Golen back to the state where she played college ball -- she was a forward for Harvard, earning the team's most improved player award in 2011-12 and serving as team captain in 2012-13. She was second on the team in three-pointers as a junior and senior, shooting better than 40 percent from beyond the arc both seasons.
Scouting UMass Lowell
UMass Lowell (0-4, 0-0 America East) is seeking its first win of the season, having dropped three road games and one game at Costello Athletic Center. The Bulldogs and the River Hawks already have one common opponent -- Lowell lost at Colgate 73-51, while Yale fell 70-67 in OT. This is former NBA player Tom Garrick's second season as head coach; he was an assistant at BC for three seasons prior to taking over at UML.
Scouting Northeastern
Northeastern (0-3, 0-0 CAA), which plays at Fordham Wednesday, is also seeking its first win of the season. The Huskies and the Bulldogs last met on Mar. 15, 2018 in the first round of the WBI Tournament. Yale won that game 68-58 en route to winning the WBI Championship.
Jen Berkowitz '18 led the Bulldogs with 23 points, adding six rebounds. Yale's bench outscored Northeastern's bench 27-16.
