The Yale men's fencing team competed individually at the Garret Open on Sunday and had strong results. The competition was fierce for the top places, with opponents coming from powerhouse schools Columbia, Penn State, UPenn, UNC, and Ohio State.
Â
The Garret Open is formatted in three rounds of pools, with cuts made after each, followed by a direct elimination tableau for the top 16.Â
Â
In this tough field, foilist
Earnest Chen returned to campus with a trophy after having tied for third place. In his pool rounds, Chen won over two thirds of his bouts, earning the chance to compete in the direct elimination round, where he won two bouts over higher-seeded fencers before ultimately falling by a narrow 15-13 margin to the eventual champion of the day.
Â
Chen's squad mate
Cameron Allen also made it to the direct elimination round and was eliminated by the eventual champion in the first round. Allen placed 11th overall. Also making it to the direct elimination round was
Maxwell Yee, a first year who celebrated his first Garret Open with a strong 10th-place finish. Fellow foilists
Allan Ding and
Daniel Li also competed, ending 34th and 32nd, respectively in such a competitive pool.
Â
Epeeist
Malcolm Miller also earned a space in the direct elimination round. Though his first bout was against the fourth-seeded fencer, Miller managed a 15-14 victory and proceeded to the tableau of eight. His loss in the next round was to the eventual champion of the day, leaving Miller at a respectable eighth place overall. While Miller was the only Bulldog to make the direct elimination round, his squad mate Jayson Thompson earned a place in the third round of pools, placing 19th overall. The rest of the squad also performed well in such a competitive field, with
Isaac Shelanski placing 25th,
Jonah Cho placing 29th, and
John Kim placing 35th.
Â
The saber squad saw
Nicolas Del Vecchio in the direct elimination round. While Del Vecchio did not win his elimination bout, cheered on by teammates and family, he put up a solid 15-12 fight against the eventual champion. Squadmate
Andrew Zhang made it to the third round of pools, ending the day ranked 23rd, with teammates
Elijah Hong and
Kevin Callahan close behind, at 27th and 29th, respectively.Â
