NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's depth and balance was on full display in Friday's home opener. Thirteen different Bulldogs scored as Yale rolled to a 94-37 victory over Oberlin at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
Paul Atkinson (12 points) and Azar Swain (11 points) were the only Bulldogs in double figures. Jordan Bruner and Eze Dike added nine points, first years August Mahoney and EJ Jarvis each scored eight, and Wyatt Yess had seven. Matthue Cotton scored six, Jalen Gabbidon, Jameel Alausa, Jake Lanford and Isaiah Kelly had five, and Michael Feinberg scored four. Eric Monroe contributed a team-high five assists.
Yale, which has opened the season with a pair of victories, led 38-26 at halftime and then broke the game open with a huge second half, outscoring the Yeomen 56-11.
"The thing I liked the most about the game was the start of the second half by the first team," said James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "After sitting down for most of the first half, they came out and really took control of the game. It was us getting back to the way we play, and it's fun to watch when we do that."
The Bulldogs shot 66.7 percent (18-of-27) from the field over the final 20 minutes.
Yale outrebounded the Yeomen 46-20 in the game.
Oberlin is coached by Isaiah Cavaco, a 2001 Yale graduate who played for and coached with Jones. It was the Yeomen's third time playing at Yale under Cavaco, who has guided the program to its most success in decades.
"He's been a really good friend and a big supporter of our program," Jones said. "It's nice to see his team and what he has been able to do with his program. He's done a really good job."
Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to Northern California to meet San Francisco on Monday. Tipoff is slated for 9 p.m. EST.
