NEW HAVEN, Conn. – First year
Ellery Winkler made quite a first impression. In the first two games of her collegiate career, Winkler totaled three goals and one assist. Now she has the first honor of her young career, earning Ivy League Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week honors.
In Friday's opener at St. John's, Winkler's goal early in the second half tied the score at 1-1. The Red Storm eventually won 2-1 in double overtime, despite the Bulldogs having the better of the play for long stretches. She followed that up with a two-goal, one-assist performance as Yale dismantled Fairfield 5-1 in the home opener on Sunday at Reese Stadium. Her first goal was the biggest of the game, coming with less than a minute to play in the first half and shortly after the Stags had pulled to within 2-1. She tallied again late in the second half.
Winkler, a Concord, Mass., native, brings strong credentials to Yale. At the Middlesex School, she scored a school-record 58 goals and also tallied 30 assists. She was a United Soccer Coaches All-Region and NEPSAC All-New England selection and earned Massachusetts all-state honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. In addition, she played club soccer for the FC Stars, helping them win two ECNL Northeast Conference championships and advance to the national championship game in 2017.
The Bulldogs (1-1) are back in action on Friday when they play at Loyola, Md.
