NEW HAVEN, Conn. –The Yale University athletics program added five more teams to last year's total of Public Recognition Awards in the latest NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) with 17 Bulldog programs being recognized, tied for third most in the country.
Yale also ranks second in the country with five programs that have received Public Recognition Awards in each of the 15 years of its existence: baseball, football, gymnastics, softball and women's soccer.
The 1,380 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 881 women's teams and 499 men's or co-ed squads. The award is given to teams that have an APR among the top 10 percent in their respective sport. APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport.
The total number of teams being recognized increased by 52 from a year ago, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Scores for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, with 1,266 teams earning a perfect score, also an increase of 52 teams.
"The number of teams earning Public Recognition Awards – including those earning perfect scores – has increased again, demonstrating the commitment member schools and college athletes have made to high academic achievement," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "Congratulations to these teams for their continued academic success."
Each NCAA varsity team is given a score on a scale from 1-1,000 (1,000 meaning that every individual on that team was academically eligible for the following term and either returned to school or graduated). All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 over a multi-year period to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance. All of the 26 Dartmouth teams measured were well above the penalty line. The current report measures enrollment from the academic years 2015-16 through 2018-19.
In all, 113 Ivy League programs were honored, more than any other conference. The Patriot League was second with 95 qualifying and the Big Ten third with 84. The 113 teams comprised 51 percent of the teams in the Ancient Eight, the highest percentage of the Division I conferences with the Patriot League second (45 percent) and the Big East third (39 percent).
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released on May 19.
Men's lightweight and heavyweight rowing, men's and women's squash and sailing do not contest NCAA Championships and therefore were not measured.
