NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 8 Yale Men's Squash Team opened its 2021-22 season in style, defeating No. 7 Virginia 6-3 at the Brady Center on Saturday. Thanks to several dominant performances, the Bulldogs successfully avenged their 5-4 loss to Virginia at nationals two years ago.
Three Elis swept their Cavalier opponents, including two first-years, No. 4
Maxwell Orr and No. 5
Brian Leonard, and senior No. 9
Tyler Carney.
Sophomore No. 3
Siow Yee Xian beat a formidable opponent in a five-game match that lasted nearly 90 minutes.
Lynn Leong, the Brooks G. Ragen Director of Squash at Yale, deemed it "the match of the day."
Fellow sophomore No. 6
Jed Burde surrendered a close match at the No. 6 seed. He fought tooth-and-nail in a 70-minute, five-game contest that was decided in an 11-8 final game.
The Elis (1-0, 0-0 Ivy) are back at the Brady Center tomorrow at noon to face No. 12 Western University.
