NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The challenges keep coming for the Yale men's basketball team. After playing preseason MAAC favorite Iona on Sunday in the Hall of Fame Invitational at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the Bulldogs now host perhaps the hottest team in the MAAC. Monmouth, fresh off a victory at Pittsburgh on Sunday, visits Lee Amphitheater on Tuesday night. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. and ESPN+ has the video.
Â
It could be a record-breaking night for Yale's
Azar Swain, who has 229 career three-pointers, which ties him with Ed Petersen '92 for the most in school history. Swain was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on Monday after averaging 27.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4 steals and 3.5 assists in two games last week. In the Bulldogs' 71-52 victory over UAlbany last Tuesday, he scored 21 points and had five steals, and he followed that up by scoring a career-high 34 points against Iona on Sunday, including making seven three-pointers, one shy of the single-game school record.
Â
Swain leads the team in scoring at 19.5 ppg., which is second in the Ivy League.
Matthue Cotton (11.6 ppg.) and
Jalen Gabbidon (10.1 ppg.) also average double figures in scoring. Gabbidon and Swain share the team lead in rebounding at 4.8 rpg.
Â
Two newcomers to the roster this season are coming off strong games vs. Iona.
Matt Knowling scored a career-high eight points and grabbed two rebounds, while
Jack Molloy had seven points and three rebounds in 11 minutes.
Â
The Bulldogs are 4-1 in the friendly confines of Lee Amphitheater. The have outscored their opponents by 18.2 ppg., while shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point range. Swain averages 19.8 ppg., and Cotton 15.0 ppg. on the home floor.
Â
The non-conference portion of Yale's schedule is nearly complete. Following Tuesday's game, the Bulldogs take a break for exams before hosting Howard on Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. The final non-league game is at St. Mary's on Dec. 28. Yale then opens Ivy League play on Jan. 2 at home against Columbia.
Â
HISTORY LESSONS
Â
Yale and Monmouth are playing for only the third time with each team winning on the other's home floor. In the last meeting in 2018, the Bulldogs knocked off the Hawks 66-58 in New Jersey.
Azar Swain scored 14 points off the bench, one of three Bulldogs in double figures. In 2017, Monmouth topped Yale 85-64 at Lee Amphitheater.
Â
SCOUTING MONMOUTH
Â
In addition to their win over Pitt, the Hawks (8-2) have victories over Cincinnati, 61-59, and Princeton, 76-64, on their resume. Their only two losses have come by two points, 68-66 at Charlotte, and five points, 88-83 at St. John's. George Papas (16.6 ppg.) and Shavar Reynolds (16.5 ppg.) lead the team in scoring. Papas and Walker Miller each average a team-best 6.5 rpg. Six of Monmouth's wins have come in true road games, which leads the nation. The Hawks' 8-2 start is their best since 2016-17. Monmouth is already 2-0 in MAAC play after wins over Niagara and Canisius.
