NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A busy start to the month of December continues for the Yale men's basketball team when UAlbany visits the John J. Lee Amphitheater on Tuesday night. The opening tip is slated for 7 p.m. and ESPN+ has the video.

The Bulldogs (5-5) are back home after a trip to Alabama on Saturday where they fell to No. 20 Auburn. Matthue Cotton scored 14 points, Isaiah Kelly added 12 and EJ Jarvis grabbed eight rebounds. Yale limited the high-powered Tigers to 44 percent shooting from the field and hung with them on the glass, getting outrebounded only 48-43.

The Bulldogs are second in the Ivy League in scoring defense (69.5 ppg.) and field goal percentage defense (.415).

Yale has three of its next four games in the friendly confines of Lee Amphitheater starting on Tuesday. The Bulldogs are 3-1 at home so far while averaging 85.5 points and shooting 48.4 percent from the field. They have averaged 50.0 points in the second half in the four games at Lee, including a 57-point outburst in last Wednesday's victory over Lehigh.

Azar Swain is Yale's leading scorer at 17.9 ppg., which is second in the Ivy League. Swain has scored 20 or more points five times on the season, including each of the last two home games. He also is approaching a significant milestone. With 220 career three-pointers, he is nine shy of the school record set by Ed Petersen '92.

Cotton (12.0 ppg.) and Jalen Gabbidon (11.1 ppg.) also average double figures in scoring. Gabbidon and Jarvis share the team lead in rebounding at 5.2 rpg.

James Jones, The Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of the Bulldogs, is a 1986 graduate of UAlbany where he played for and coached with the legendary Dr. Richard Sauers.  Jones is the all-time winningest men's basketball coach at Yale. His 338 career victories are the second most in Ivy League history, and his 180 Ivy wins are the third most in league history.

Jones, the longest tenured head coach in the league, has guided the Bulldogs to five Ivy League championships – 2002, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020 - three NCAA Tournament berths – 2016, 2019, 2020 - and six postseason appearances.

HISTORY LESSONS

The Bulldogs have won the last two meetings with UAlbany, including 61-52 in New York in 2019. Swain (11 points) and Gabbidon (10 points) each scored in double figures for Yale. The Bulldogs are 4-1 all-time against the Great Danes at Lee Amphitheater and have won the last two games played in New Haven. The first meeting between the teams came in 2000.

SCOUTING UALBANY

Yale is the second Ivy League opponent for the Great Danes, who fell to Harvard 60-53 at home back on Nov. 17. UAlbany (1-6) has played a challenging schedule that includes trips to Kentucky and Kansas State. The Great Danes' victory came over Eastern Illinois, 64-62 on Nov. 24. De'Vondre Perry (12.4 ppg.) and Matt Cerruti (10.1 ppg.) average double figures in scoring. Dwayne Killings, who was an Associate Head Coach at Marquette, is in his first season leading the UAlbany program.
