Three Earn Gold Medals in Italy

VARESE, Italy – Six Bulldogs who own IRA National Championship rings rowing for Steve Gladstone, Yale's Craig W. Johnson '68 Head Coach of Heavyweight Crew, had strong showings at the 2021 European Rowing Championships last weekend.

Ollie Wynne-Griffith '17, Sholto Carnegie '18, Paul Jacquot '18, Charlie Elwes '19, Andrin Gulich '21 and Daire Lynch '21 were rowing between the mountains on Lago di Varese in a championship event first held in 1893. They are all hoping to earn a spot for their country in this summer's Tokyo Olympic Games.

Wynne-Griffith, in the six seat, and Elwes (5) powered the Great Britain eight to a gold medal, edging Romania and Netherlands with a time of 5:30.86 in the April 11 final.

Another Brit, Carnegie, tasted victory last weekend. He stroked the straight four to a first-place finish (5:56.49) while crossing the line ahead of Romania and Italy.

Team Switzerland's straight four had Jacquot in the second seat and Gulich at stroke. They raced to a time of 6:06.52 in the B Final, which was good for second and an overall place of eighth for the championship.

Lynch, competing in a single for Ireland, took 14th at the ERC last weekend.
