NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale's start to the Ivy League season was delayed by nearly two weeks. The result turned out okay as the Bulldogs rolled to a 96-69 victory over Cornell on Saturday at the John J. Lee Amphitheater despite having played only once since Dec. 14. There won't be nearly as long a wait for game two. Yale travels to Providence to meet Brown on Monday. Tipoff at the Pizzitola Center is slated for 5 p.m. The game will be televised regionally on NESN and streamed live on ESPN+

The Bulldogs didn't miss a beat against the Big Red, shooting 54.2 percent from the field, outrebounding Cornell 41-25 and dishing out a season-high 20 assists on 32 field goals. Isaiah Kelly scored a career-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. Matt Knowling also had a career afternoon, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds. In his last four games, Knowling is averaging 11 points, while shooting .739 (17-of-23) from the field.

In all, four Bulldogs scored in double figures in the win over Cornell. Jalen Gabbidon, the 2020 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year, scored 13 points and Azar Swain added 12. Swain, a 2020 first team All-Ivy selection, leads the league in scoring at 18.2 ppg. It's already been a memorable season for Swain, who became Yale's all-time leader in three-pointers (236) and scored the 1,000th point of his career.

The Bulldogs (7-8, 1-0 Ivy) have now won their Ivy opener in each of the last eight seasons. Yale has been 2-0 in Ivy play in four of the last six seasons, including each of the last two.

The Bulldogs are the two-time defending Ivy champions and were selected as the favorite again this season in the league's preseason media poll back in October. Yale is in the midst of the most successful era in the long history of the program. Over the last 6+ seasons, the Bulldogs have a remarkable 64-21 Ivy record. During that stretch, they have won four league titles and earned three NCAA Tournament berths, including notching the first NCAA victory in school history.

Yale played a very challenging non-conference schedule. The Bulldogs' eight losses have come to teams that currently have a combined record of 93-33 (.738).

HISTORY LESSONS

Yale has won four straight games over Brown, sweeping the season series from the Bears in each of the last two seasons. The Bulldogs have won five of the last six meetings at the Pizzitola Center, including a 73-62 victory in the last game between the teams in 2020. Matthue Cotton had 20 points to help lead the way to that victory. Yale leads the all-time series 112-53. The first meeting between the teams came in 1905.

SCOUTING BROWN

The Bears (9-10, 1-3 Ivy) are coming off a 76-74 loss at Princeton on Saturday. Kino Lilly Jr. scored a career-high 25 points, and Tamenang Choh added 18 points, seven assists and four rebounds for Brown. Two of Brown's three Ivy losses have come by four points or less. Choh (13.8 ppg., 8.1 rpg.) leads the team in scoring and rebounding. In four Ivy games, Cho is averaging 21.8 points and 9.5 rebounds. Lilly Jr. also averages double figures in scoring at 13.6 ppg.
