Yale student becomes seventh U.S. man to win Olympic individual competition

BEIJING, China – If you happened to walk by Ingalls Rink on a weekday afternoon over the last few years, you might have heard an Elton John song or two booming over the audio system.

That's because Nathan Chen, a Yale undergraduate, was leaping on skates inside the Whale preparing for what happened Thursday at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Chen landed all five quad jumps to a compilation of music from the 2019 film "Rocketman," on his way to becoming the seventh U.S. man to win a Gold Medal in the Olympic individual competition.

There was no cramming for the biggest test of his athletic life. The 22-year-old, who entertained everyone working inside Ingalls during his long practice sessions, won by 22 points while posting a 218.63 in the four-minute performance at Capital Indoor Stadium.

Chen is a three-time world champion and a six-time national champion from Salt Lake City, Utah.
