Gabriel Ruiz shot a six-under par and tied for fourth place at the Gopher Invitational on Sunday and Monday, helping the Yale men's golf program to a 10
th place finish at the Windsong Farm Golf Club.
The Bulldogs were part of a competitive 15-team field which included six programs that qualified for the regional round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship this past spring. Ruiz was masterful in the 54-hole tournament – posting a four-under (67) in the first round and three-under (68) in the final round (67-72-68=207) to lead all Yale players.
Georgia Southern won the invitational with a team score of 20-under (832), while Kansas and Kent State were tied for second at 15-under (837). Yale recorded a two-under (850), finishing one stroke behind Notre Dame and one ahead of both Toledo and Coastal Carolina.
Senior
Sho Wai Wu carded a one-over (214) for the tournament and finished tied for 39
th, while sophomore
Blake Brantley and first year
Will Lodge tied for 49
th at three-over (216). Sophomore
Ben Carpenter tied for 69
th at seven-over (220).
Ruiz had 14 birdies over the weekend, tying for second among the 81-player field. He also recorded a five-under on Par 4 holes (average score of 3.85), which was tied for the best among the elite field of golfers.
Yale participated in the Gopher Invitational for the first time since 2008, which is when head coach
Colin Sheehan began his tenure with the program.

Over the next two weekends, the Bulldogs will be playing on their home course – the Yale Golf Course – in the F.A. Borsodi Student Championship (Intra-Yale Competition) on Sept. 16-17 and in the Macdonald Cup on Sept. 24-25.
