Three Bulldogs Earn Major Awards as Ivy League Announces Year-End Accolades

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior setter Carly Diehl was named Ivy League Player of the Year, senior captain libero Maile Somera won conference Co-Defensive Player of Year and head coach Erin Appleman earned back-to-back Coach of the Year honors to highlight a program-record six All-Ivy selections for the Yale Volleyball, announced by the league office today.
 
Senior outside hitter Audrey Leak and junior outside hitter Mila Yarich joined Diehl to earn first-team honors, while Somera and first-year outside hitter Betsy Goodenow were named to the second team.  Junior middle blocker Gigi Barr was awarded Honorable Mention All-Ivy.  
 
Diehl, of San Diego, Calif., represents the ninth Bulldog to win Ivy Player of the Year honors.  She led the conference in assists per set (10.93) and finished fifth in service aces per set (0.43) while averaging 2.15 digs and one kill per set in Ivy matches.
 
Somera, of Barrington, R.I., led the conference in service aces per set (0.57) and finished fourth in digs per set (4.43).  In addition, Somera is second in service aces and sixth in digs all-time at Yale.
 
Leak, of Saddle River, N.J., was named AVCA National Player of the Week earlier this year and led the Ivy League in kills per set (3.84), finished second in points per set (4.11) and seventh in hitting percentage (.355) in conference play. Leak also led the team for the entire season with 215 kills. Leak was also named Academic All-Ivy. 
 
Yarich, of Tampa, Fla., was among the Ivy League leaders in kills per set (6th), points per set (6th) and digs per set (7th).  For the entire season, Yarich was among the team leaders in digs (2nd), kills (3rd), service aces (4th) and also dished out 36 assists. 
 
Goodenow, of Lexana, Kan., averaged 2.48 kills per set, 3.17 points per set, hit .288 and served 14 aces in conference action.  In Ivy matches, she averaged two digs per set and tied for second on the team in total blocks while also placing second on the team in total kills (201) for the entire season.
 
Barr, of Elmhurst, Ill., was second in the Ivy League in hitting percentage at .384.  In addition, Barr averaged 2.43 points per set with a 1.90 kills per set average and tied for second on the team in total blocks with 35.
 
Appleman won her third Ivy League Coach of the Year honor after leading the Bulldogs to a 14-0 conference record for the second time in her career.  Under Appleman, Yale has won 12 Ivy League titles – the most of any volleyball coach in conference history. 
 
After winning its fourth Ivy League title in five seasons, the Bulldogs earned the No. 1 seed for this weekend's Ivy League Tournament.  Yale, which has won 15 in a row overall, will play No. 4 seed Harvard on Friday at 7 p.m. at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.
