NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- After a thrilling 1-0 win over Bryant in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Yale men's soccer team will look to keep the magic alive in the second round. The Bulldogs travel to Hempstead, N.Y. for a matchup with No. 14 Hofstra on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. for a spot in the NCAA Third Round.
Rogers' Miracle Goal
The Bulldogs earned a berth in the second round thanks to an 89th minute score from
Max Rogers in the NCAA First Round. Playing at Bryant, the contest between the two teams remained scoreless until Rogers connected on a shot from midfield that soared over the head of the Bryant keeper and into the back of the net for an unbelievable game-winner. The Bulldogs handed the America East champions only their second loss of the season and Rogers' goal was just the sixth allowed by Bryant all year.
The Ivy League Tournament victors are peaking at the right moment, having won three straight games for the first time this season. The Bulldogs have only conceded a single goal throughout that span.
CAA Champions
Hofstra earned a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament after another historic season, culminating in a CAA Championship. The Pride have dominated the league, winning three consecutive league titles. This year, Hofstra finished 13-3-4 and concluded the season with the eighth-highest RPI in the nation. The Pride are led by the dynamic duo of Ryan Carmichael and Eliot Goldthorp. Both players are near the top of the NCAA leader board in goals and assists. Carmichael is tied for fourth in the nation with 14 scores, while Goldthorp is tied for second with 12 helpers this season.
Matching Up
Yale and Hofstra have played five times before, with the series split at 2-2-1. The last time the two squads met was in 2010, resulting in a 1-0 victory for the Pride. The opposing teams have one common opponent this season: Penn. Hofstra topped the Quakers 1-0 on Sept. 4, while the Bulldogs earned a 1-1 draw with their Ivy League foe on Sept. 23.
The two conference champions are evenly matched in all facets of the game. Both teams rank in the top-40 in goals against average and have all-conference goalkeepers between the posts. The matchup to watch will be the attacking duo of Hofstra against the sturdy back line of the Bulldogs. Goldthorp, the CAA Player of the Year, and Carmichael have combined for 22 goals and 16 assists. They will be going up against Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year,
TJ Presthus and All-Ivy League honorable mention recipient,
Jake Schaffer.
Neither team has lost a contest in nearly one month and a berth in the NCAA Third Round is on the line.
