Bulldogs Go Farr in First Day of IC4A Competition

BOSTON -- With the Ivy Heps in the rear-view mirror, several of the Yale men's track and field team's athletes motored towards promising performances at the IC4A Regional Championships.

Although only a first year, Andrew Farr has steadily emerged as a vital cog in this team. His exemplary discipline and focused approach to training has been rewarded yet again this season, as he broke the formidable 22-second indoor 200m barrier – with a new PR of 21.98. Farr has consistently demonstrated his strength and fitness over his preferred 400m, and with his shorter sprint times continuing to whittle down, he will hope to contend with the very best of the Ivy League come outdoors. His 200m improvement is especially noteworthy as Sunday Farr will make up the 400m leg of Yale's distance medley relay (DMR) team, where his split could well be the crucial difference in the race.

Also in the 200m, senior Jeamy Williams ran a time of 22.40, valuable speed work as he will also likely return to that event for the remainder of the season. In the 400m, Aaron Miller narrowly missed breaking the 48-second mark, but Saturday's sprint suggests that 47-second performances remain an exciting expectation for the outdoor season. Simon Jupp sliced a full two seconds off last week's Heps performance, running his second fastest career 500m, with a time of 1:04.36. Jupp's race sharpness is still developing off the back of an injury at the beginning of last month, so another healthy race builds his momentum into the outdoor 400m for the rest of the year.

Three of Yale's men's throwers competed in the weight throw competition. They performed admirably and backed up the performances of last week – when each of the tree athletes set new personal bests at the Ivy League Championships. Nolan Recker led the brigade with a distance of 17.83m, Jake Sun was second with a distance of 16.68m and Chris Ward rounded off the Bulldogs with a distance of 16.20m.

The distance runners will be all seeing the IC4A competition as an opportunity for fast times on their last run on BU's indoor facility. Saturday a number of Bulldogs toed the line. Drake Prince was a particular highlight as he was back into trademark form with a comfortable yet impressive 800m time of 1.50.03. This time was less than a second away from his personal record and also the Yale all-time record, so expect potential fireworks when the gun goes off for Sunday's finals. Also into Sunday's finals, Austin Montini (2:25.48) shaved four-tenths of a second of his previous best 1000m time to qualify. He showed tremendous pace (a 1:55 split) through 800m, and with Sunday's promise of potential silverware, we can expect an ever faster close.

In the mile, Heps finalist Winslow Atkeson showed his quality again as he ran a new PR of 4:5.30, emerging as the fastest overall qualifier into Sunday's finals. He will no doubt fancy his chances to win the IC4A crown. Liam Garrett will also vie for that title as he is through to the finals, with a heat time of 4:07.04. Other distance athletes Tanish Chettiar, Calvin Katz and Varun Oberai each competed in the first day of races, running formidably over events largely unfamiliar to them this season.

In Sunday's competition, the Bulldog finalists will be joined by several 3000m competitors, as well as the distance medley relay team. The DMR squad will be running against fast competition, but also importantly the clock as they fully intend to target the Yale record.
