This Saturday, the Yale men's track and field team had success across each of the team's three competitions.
Georgia Tech Invitational
ATLANTA, Ga. - Under the warm Atlanta sun,
Matt Appel caught fire in the discus competition, setting a new Yale school record (58.38m). Appel looks to be rounding into form at the perfect point of the season, and given his past Ivy Heps successes he will no doubt threaten to improve upon this record mark.
In the jumps,
Brian Di Bassinga had a strong day in the triple jump, only marginally off his PR with a distance of the 15.03m. He also had several other impressive jumps that were unfortunately far behind the board. Still though, Di Bassinga's consistency on the day (his four recorded jumps were separated by just 18cm) suggests that another significant improvement could well be on the cards for the first year.
Unfortunately, unhelpful swirling winds put a damper on some of Yale's sprint performances. 200m competitors
Jacob Kao and
James Grindle were forced to battle blustering cross winds but were still able to use the meet to practice their race execution, even if they missed out on any scintillating times. The 400m athletes struggled less, with
Andrew Farr being Yale's fastest 400m athlete, claiming a new collegiate PR of 48.52.
Aaron Miller was only marginally behind in a time of 48.61, and
Simon Jupp also ran under the 50 second barrier. The highlight for the Yale sprinters was the 4x400m relay, when the three 400m specialists were joined by Kao, together running a season's best of 3:11.79. Each of the Bulldogs ran composed legs and made up substantial ground over the home straight, much to the crowd's delight. Miller had an especially noteworthy performance as the team's anchor leg, making up a 15-meter deficit on the two teams in front. Yale also fielded a 4x100m relay earlier in the day, which won its heat in a time of 41.23, just 0.13 of the team's season's best.

Virginia Challenge
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va - In Charlottesville,
Austin Montini was Yale's only competitor, lacing up his spikes for Saturday's 800m competition. Montini took third in his heat with a time of 1:51.95, only marginally off his recently achieved personal best. He took the race comfortably through the first 400m in a time of 54.47s, before issuing a trademark Montini finish and a second lap of 57.48. This race is further evidence of the sophomore's growing 800m confidence, especially important given the competition depth at the upcoming conference championships.

The Mark Young Invitational
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Finally, the remainder of the Bulldog cohort competed against local competition, as well as Brown, at Yale's home track.
Yale's primary success came in the 1500m event, with
Richard Sturtevant winning the meet in a time of 1:53.83 - a late surge meant that he overtook six athletes over the last lap of the race.
Tanish Chettiar also scored points in the event, finishing fifth in 3:55.76s.
Isiah Udofia showed his versatility, taking a full 0.4 seconds off his 100m season opener at UConn just a few weeks ago. This fast-developing speed will no doubt bring additional promise to an already successful long jumping season for the first year.

Next week, the Bulldogs will compete at the Penn Relays and the Texas Invitational.
