No. 22 Bulldogs Look to Clinch Ivy Tourney Berth Saturday at Columbia

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 22 Yale women's lacrosse team can clinch a spot in the Ivy League Tournament Saturday with a win at Columbia (1:00 p.m., ESPN+, International Stream, Live Stats). The Bulldogs, who enter the weekend tied for third in the Ivy standings at 3-3, are seeking their second straight Ivy Tournament appearance. They advanced to the championship game last year.

Last Game
Yale fell to Cornell 14-12 last Saturday at Reese Stadium, the Bulldogs' first home loss of the season. Sophomore midfielder Sky Carrasquillo (Alpharetta, Ga.) had a career-high five goals and six points. Sophomore goalkeeper Cami Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) made a career-high 10 saves.

Among Yale's Best
Yale's nine wins this season are tied for the second-most in a season by the team in 15 years (the 2022 squad had the most wins in that span, finishing with 11). The school record for wins in a season is 14 (1978, 1979, 1995, 1999, 2003).

Penoyer Leads in Assists
Senior attacker Olivia Penoyer (Manlius, N.Y.) leads the Ivy League in assists with 30 and set the Yale career assists record with her 87th in the win at Brown Apr. 1. Here are Yale's top five in career assists:

Olivia Penoyer (96)
Laura Karmatz '95 (86)
Erin Porta '99 (78)
Sarah Queener '03 (66)
Nicole Piasecki '84 (66)

Penoyer had 37 assists last season, six shy of Karmatz' single-season school record (set in 1994). She was a first team All-Ivy League selection.

Collignon No. 2 in Goals, Points
Sophomore attacker Jenna Collignon (Hinsdale, Ill.) is second in the Ivy League in goals with 45 and tied for second in points with 55. Earlier this year she was named to the Tewaaraton Award Women's Watch List and was an Honorable Mention ILWomen Midseason All-American. She has a 21 game point-scoring streak dating back to last season. The last time she was held without a point was Mar. 13, 2022 at Boston College.

Fallon Vaughn a Midseason All-American
Sophomore midfielder Fallon Vaughn (Concord, Mass.) joined sophomore attacker Jenna Collignon (Hinsdale, Ill.) to give Yale two Honorable Mention ILWomen Midseason All-Americans. Vaughn is fourth in the Ivy League in caused turnovers (18) and is second on the Yale team in goals (29), having scored at least three goals in seven of the last nine games. She is third on the team in points with 42. Vaughn was a first team All-Ivy League selection last year.

Sky Rising
Including a career-high five goals and six points in last Saturday's game vs. Cornell, sophomore midfielder Sky Carrasquillo (Alpharetta, Ga.) has seven goals on eight shots in the last two games. She totaled one goal on one shot in her first 12 games this season. She is sixth in the Ivy League in draw controls with 50. Carrasquillo was a second team All-Ivy League honoree last year, when she had 47 draw controls in Ivy League games – six more than any other player in the league.

New York State of Mind
Eight Bulldogs will be playing in their home state of New York Saturday:
RPI and the Ivy League
Yale is the second-highest-ranked Ivy League team in the recently released NCAA RPI rankings. Here is the full list:

20. Penn
27. Yale
45. Cornell
46. Princeton
52. Harvard
53. Brown
60. Dartmouth
111. Columbia

Last season every team that was ranked No. 22 or better in the RPI at the time of NCAA Tournament selections made the tournament. The lowest-ranked team to host first- and second-round NCAA Tournament games was Princeton, which was No. 12 in the RPI at the time of selections. NCAA Tournament selections for 2023 will be announced Sunday, May 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Scouting Columbia
Columbia (3-11, 0-6 Ivy League) has not won an Ivy League game since a 15-14 win vs. Harvard Apr. 6, 2019. Yale has won the last two games in the series, including a 24-14 win last season at Reese Stadium. Midfielder Cecelia Messner is the Lions' leading scorer (24-5-29) – one of three first-years who are among Columbia's top four scorers.

Around the Ivy League
Penn (6-0) has clinched the Ivy League Championship and the No. 1 seed in the Ivy League Tournament. All other seeds are still up for grabs. Harvard sits in second at 4-2 in Ivy games, but has just a one-game lead on the four teams tied for third at 3-3: Cornell, Dartmouth, Princeton and Yale. Brown (2-4) and Columbia (0-6) have been eliminated from tournament contention. The full list of all the scenarios that could play out this weekend, as provided by the Ivy League, is available by clicking here.

Here is a look at the league slate for the weekend:

Saturday
  • 1:00 p.m. No. 22 Yale at Columbia (ESPN+)
  • 1:00 p.m. Dartmouth at No. 14 Penn (ESPN+)
  • 3:30 p.m. Brown at Cornell (ESPN+)
            Sunday
  • 12:00 p.m. Harvard at Princeton (ESPNU)

The top four teams in the final standings make the Ivy League Tournament, with semifinals set for May 5 and the championship set for May 7. All games take place at the site of the No. 1 seed, Penn and will be streamed on ESPN+. They will be held at the Quakers' Penn Park. Tickets go on sale Monday.

A Yale win on Saturday would ensure the Bulldogs an Ivy League Tournament spot; there are also a variety of other scenarios in which the Bulldogs could clinch a berth. The Bulldogs could finish as high as the No. 2 seed.
