2023 Field Hockey Schedule Announced; Bulldogs to Play Three Top 10 Teams

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team will take on some of the top teams in the country in 2023, including a game at NCAA semifinalist Maryland on Sept. 10. The Terrapins are one of three teams that ended the 2022 season ranked in the top 10 who are on Yale's schedule for 2023. The Bulldogs announced the schedule Tuesday. The 16-game regular season (seven Ivy League games, nine non-league games) starts Sept. 1 on the road at Temple. The Ivy League portion of the season starts Sept. 22 at Penn. The Ivy League Tournament, which features the top four teams in the regular season standings competing for the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, takes place Nov. 3 (semifinals) and Nov. 5 (championship) at the site of the No. 1 seed.

This is Yale's second season with Melissa Gonzalez as the Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. Kerry Kiddoo and Jordan Page return as assistant coaches. Rising senior forward/midfielder Ashley Kim (Fredericksburg, Va.) is Yale's captain.

Here is a breakdown of the schedule for 2023:
  • Yale's regular-season schedule consists of 16 games. There are seven Ivy League games (at Brown, at Columbia, at Cornell, vs. Dartmouth, vs. Harvard, at Penn and vs. Princeton) and nine non-league games.
  •  The schedule includes six home games, nine road games and one neutral-site game.
  • The schedule includes nine non-conference games, and five different conferences are represented:
    • Sept. 1 at Temple (Big East)
    • Sept. 3 at Saint Joseph's (Atlantic 10)
    • Sept. 8 vs. American (Patriot) at Maryland 
    • Sept. 10 at Maryland (Big Ten)
    • Sept. 15 vs. Fairfield (Northeast Conference) 
    • Sept. 17 vs. Sacred Heart (Northeast Conference)
    • Sept. 24 at Quinnipiac (Big East)
    • Oct. 1 at UMass (Atlantic 10)
    • Oct. 22 vs. Richmond (Atlantic 10)
  • The Bulldogs play seven teams that ended last season ranked in the top 25 in the NFHCA poll, including three in the top 10: No. 2 Maryland, No. 7 Princeton, No. 9 Saint Joseph's, No. 16 Harvard, No. 21 UMass, No. 23 Temple and No. 24 Cornell.
     
  • The Bulldogs play seven teams that ended last season ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA RPI rankings, including three in the top 10: No. 4 Maryland, No. 7 Saint Joseph's, No. 8 Princeton, No. 11 Harvard, No. 19 UMass, No. 23 Temple, No. 25 Cornell.
     
  • Three of Yale's opponents played in the 2022 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament: Maryland (advanced to semifinals before losing to Northwestern), Princeton (lost in first round to Syracuse) and Saint Joseph's (advanced to second round before losing to eventual champion North Carolina).
     
  • Yale plays games in six different states (Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island). 
  • Yale Field Hockey Alum Weekend is Sept. 15-17, with home games against Fairfield Friday Sept. 15 and Sacred Heart Sunday Sept. 17. Further details about that weekend will be announced later.
     
  • On Friday, Oct. 27 vs. Princeton Yale will celebrate Senior Day, as the Bulldogs pay tribute to the members of the Class of 2024: 
  • The Ivy League Tournament takes place at the site of the No. 1 seed and includes the top four teams in the regular season standings. Semifinals take place Friday Nov. 3 and the tournament championship game is Sunday Nov. 5.
     
  • NCAA Tournament competition starts with opening round games Nov. 8 (featuring the four lowest automatic-qualification teams). The field includes 10 automatic qualifiers -- including a spot for the Ivy League Tournament champion -- and eight at-large selections. The first- and second-round games take place at campus sites Nov. 10 and 12. The winners of those series advance to the semifinals on Nov. 17. The championship is Nov. 19. The semis and championship are hosted by North Carolina.
