About the Regatta
  • The year 2023 marks the 156th regatta in these two programs' storied history.
  • The first race was held in 1852 on the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee in Center Harbor, N.H.
  • "The Race" began when Yale issued a challenge to Harvard to "test the superiority of the oarsmen of the two colleges." Following the first race in 1852, there was a layoff period until 1855 when Yale reignited the challenge between both institutions.
  • The first YH regatta was only two miles long, which eventually transitioned to a four-mile race.

Series Records
  • 1V (Sexton Cup): Harvard leads 95-59 (1 no result)
  • 2V (F. Valentine Chappell Trophy): Harvard leads 77-40
  • 3V (New London Cup): Harvard leads 75-41-1

A Look Back
Last season's YH race saw Yale sweep the Thames River for the first time in 26 years. The Bulldogs took the crown in all four races, while the 1V crew set the upstream record.

This Season
  • The first varsity, fourth varsity, and fifth varsity boats went undefeated in all four regular season races.
  • The second varsity squad took a third-place finish in the opening race, second, and then back-to-back first place finishes to wrap the regular season.
  • After taking second in the first race of the season, the third varsity went on to win three-straight.
  • At Eastern Sprints, the Bulldogs secured their seventh-straight EARC title.
  • Both the 1V and the 3V boats took first place, while the 4V took third, 5V took second, and 2V finished fifth.
  • The 1V boat also broke the Lake Quinsigamond course record with a time of 5:23.619).
  • Along with their EARC victory, Yale also secured its seventh-straight Ivy League title.
  • Steve Gladstone, Yale's Craig W. Johnson '68 Head Coach, won his fifth Ivy League Coach of the Year award.
