Eight Saves for Summer in Season-Opening 1-0 Win at Temple

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Yale field hockey team opened the 2023 season with a 1-0 win over Temple at Howarth Field Friday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Luanna Summer made eight saves for the shutout, the fifth of her career. She and the defensive penalty corner unit held Temple scoreless on 13 penalty corners.
 
The loss drops the Owls to 2-1 for the season.

  • A kick save by senior goalkeeper Luanna Summer with 3:18 left in the game during a Temple penalty corner helped keep the Owls off the scoreboard. Summer followed that up by knocking away a shot with 1:42 left to deny Temple's last good chance to tie the game.
  • Temple goalkeeper Molly Frey made one save, denying a shot by junior forward Lily Ramsey six minutes into the fourth quarter.
  • A pair of first years – forward Emma Ramsey and back/midfielder Hettie Whittington – earned starts in their first career games. 
  • The game also marked the first career start for sophomore midfielder/back Maddy Zavalick.
  • A pair of Bulldogs -- first-year midfielder Fenne Mulder and sophomore forward/midfielder Lauren Venter -- came off the bench to make their first career appearances for Yale.
